So, for my sweet sixteenth fill for Gerry Koster's Dizzy Atmosphere, I began where he left off last week - playing some Bill Laswell. Bill's one of my fave artists, and looking back through my collection, is probably the most represented besides Brian Eno. So, last year Bill released Against Empire, it's an extended jam of sorts featuring a ton of musicians, Pharoah Sanders most prominent amongst them in light of his recent project with Floating Points. Peter Apfelbaum also plays on this album, he's played with Bill on projects of Jai Uttals as a member of the Pagan Love Orchestra, most prominently Shiva Station, released by Triloka Records back in 1997. This introduces a set that follows with some recent remixes by Georgia Anne Muldrow and Jlin remixing Henry Threadgill and Steve Lehman respectively. Both remixes really play with the originals in a great way. Between the two remixes I dropped a recent release by Australian Drummer Simon Barker who has released a track named AB Ten(Learning in Change). Simon is a really interesting drummer, I recommend you explore his music. It kinda works, sussing the line up with a drummer utilising electronics via the Lyra 8 synth amidst the remixes. Yeah.

Second set dances with and around the US ensemble Thumbscrew, particularly their bass player Michael Formanek. He also plays with Anthony Pirog, on a really rockesque number Song in 5. I discovered Anthony through his duet with cellist Janel Leppin back in 2012. They released a beautifully calming and kinda edgy release, Where Is Home on Cuneiform Records - I played a track or two on my former PBSFM show In the Quiet. I threw in an Oliver Lake Trio track amongst this, catting the pigeons. Thumbscrew to finish.

So then we get Shortered for the third bracket. Wayne playing with Tony Williams, Yas-Kaz, and two of his own ensembles. Man - picked up an original 1969 US copy of  Super Nova by Wayne Shorter on Blue Note from Greville Records just the day prior to the show. It's an outstanding album and there's some great blowing going on despite choosing the more impressionistic Jobim track, Dindi to play. There's some killer percussion from Airto Moreira on this number. But wow, the music on Super Nova is really forward looking, he'd in the previous year ('68) played on Miles Davis' Nefertiti, and In a Silent Way was released later that year. Watershed music.

Fourth bracket we got esoteric - heading to The Jewel In the Lotus through Disposing Intelligence.

Dig. Or don't.
