Fill - broadcasting Dizzy Atmosphere, 10pm - 12am, Sunday April 11 + 18 2021 - @106.7PBSFM

As always, a great pleasure filling in for Gerry Koster's Dizzy Atmosphere for two weeks on April 11 & 18.

April 11th program opened with a kind of exuberant air via David Murray, Old & New Dreams, and a new discovery for me, the Eyvind Octet.

Eyvind Octet feature a core trio who for a number of years now have been recording dedications to American saxophonist and composer Thomas Chapin. Titled "Hommage à Thomas Chapin", Ivan Bamford, Aurélian Tomasi & Stéphane Diamantakiou recorded the first volume in 2018 as a trio. A second followed as Eyvind Apocalypse 8 in 2019, and the third installment was recorded in 2020.

I only know Thomas Chapin as part of the improv ensemble Machine Gun who I sussed via a Muworks release back when. A sidenote, I really dug poet John Lunar Ritchie, who recorded with Machine Gun and as a member of the Lunar Bear Ensemble. And so, well Machine Gun were pretty full on, and now it was a revelation to hear another side of Thomas Chapin, as I didn't explore him at the time.

The Eyvind dedications are extraordinary and show Chapin to be an eclectic composer equally at home with "standard" jazz forms while exercising a really experimental approach that has you ever so beautifully immersed in avant before you know it. Kinda hot water frog subversive. I'm gonna have to go back and explore his work sometimes.

Other music from - Barney McCall w.Robert Vincs, Katarzyna Witkorski, Christophe Berthet w. Vinz Vonlanthen, Andrea Keller, Adam Simmons, Mal Waldron w.David Murray and World Saxophone Quartet.

April 18th program followed on with more of the Eyvind Thomas Chapin dedications - really liking this yeah.

Had a flurry in the middle via Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah and Rob Mazurek Exploding Star Orchestra.

I wanted to take this show into more spacious places, and this was perhaps best realised with the music of Andrea Keller, Luke Howard Trio, Robert Vincs w.Barney McCall, Julien Wilson (Stock is a masterpiece!), Cédric Dind Lavoie, Ben Marston w.Hugh Barrett & Pak Jiha.
