Kichijoji kids and some Tokyo from high above street level.

Back in 2018, we were exploring the back streets of Kichijoji. As we returned to the main drag, well, one of the main drags, a sound caught my attention. It was the joyful voices of kids playing in an indoor pool, emanating from a grill set into a wall. The sound of their voices echoing and resonating through the grill was so poignant. It mirrored the joy Colleen and I shared, as we explored an unfamiliar location, coming across aloof cats, manicured plants, streetside shrines - with no habitual overlay of our usual everyday. A wandering suburban sojourn, amongst others familiarities.

In 2023, we went to a tall building in Roppongi. It had a gallery on a floor, high above the street. The exhibition emphasised the destruction of our environment. It was bleak, though somehow a sense of beauty was gleaned from the horrible things our civilisation was doing to our environment and it's ecosystems. Creative means of addressing the destructive mores of humankind were suggested through art - clarion calls through beauty.
