A mix/meld - SOAK fill

Some weeks ago I filled in for Hannah McKittricks' SOAK on PBSFM. I have created a mix of the show in two distinct halves - I hope you enjoy them.

The first half is perhaps the more harrowing, and opens with a remix of a song I cannot get out of my mind, Nothing is Under Control. This is a remix by Meanjin/Brisbane based and musician, Madeline Cocolas. The song by Pepo Galan & Karen Vogt, originally featured on the album, The Sweet Wait. It is not only through ear-worm reasons it occupies my mind. While the song and its delivery are deeply beautiful, so too is it's lyric and its provocations. What is control if its guided by unconscious motivations and drives?  Are these the drives that steer our lives into horrors? Beauties?

The following three songs specifically reference the horrors of Jerusalem and Gaza. If you look beneath the surface (and follow the links) all the songs provoke considerations and actionable paths in support of the civilians in Gaza - go to the artists pages, explore. In particular, perhaps the most poignant moment is when Palestinian singer Jawaher Shofani sings Oh Flying Bird, based upon a Palestinian folk song. Her adaptation implores the bird to fly over and lay witness to occupied and stolen villages, once homes for Palestinian civilians. This song was featured on the beautiful but melancholy album A Time To Cry - A Lament Over Jerusalem, released by the Norwegian label, Kirkileg Kuturverksted, the World Council of Churches and Norwegian Church Aid in 2010.

The second half opens with Hauschka's Loved One's, from his recent Philanthropy release. It is followed by Meanjin/Brisbane based Ruth Gardner, who has contributed a track to the 4000 Records curated benefit album, Solidarity Soundwaves, titled Child. Then, a track from the 2018 curated benefit album between the Denovali and Hibernate labels and the humanatarian organization, War Child. The album, Salaam For Yemen, features an enormous array of contributors donating their music over two cds, featuring more than an hour of music - I chose Green Kingdom's (Mike Cottone) track Frost Cracks. Two tracks from the recent Benoît Pioulard and Offthesky (Jason Corder) collaboration, Sunder. Released through LAAPS, we listened to two tracks, Saint Praxedis and Seaside Nude - Suicide Note. We closed with the laboured slog of Tokyo Bloodworm's track Mergers and Occupations lifted from the 2011 album, Palestine.

... and then some
