I enjoyed these album covers in 2018 - especially the music

2018 while filled with a dread for humanity, was filled with some great music and art. The following selection is where much of the wow factor was heard by yours truly, however, it is by no means complete.

Amongst the following 2018 releases I re-aquainted and was wowed by some previous releases amongst which were: Cold Chisel - East; Federico Durand and hofli - Niebla y jardines tomados por las plantas;  Kazuya Matsumoto - OchiruChiruMichiru; William Burroughs - Call Me Burroughs; Mal Waldron - 1; Jayanthi Kumaresh - Mysterious Duality; Solo Andata - In the Lens; Kane Ikin + David Wenngren - Strangers.

and so ...

MNMM - Minimum sees another compelling project by creatrix, kemantche player and vocalist Gelareh Pour, drummer/percussionist Brian O'Dwyer and guitarist Gerard Mason. Minimum is an extraordinary journey, exploring traditional Iranian/Persian music elements in combination with post-rock sonic horizons and ambient music.  The resultant music is truly epic, music that despite some undercurrents of deep sadness, equally transcends, railing against darkness and loss through a luminous craft bringing to mind Dylan Thomas' entreaty to not go gently into that good night. Poet's are intrinsic to MNMM's music, all of the lyrics here are penned by Iranian contemporary poets.

Various Artists - Salaam for Yemen. In Yemen, the slaughter and starvation of million's of Yemeni citizen's is a mere expedience to the murderous, misogynistic and backward Saudi government/empire. Hibernate Records, Dronarivm and WarChild got together created this superb compilation - he and many more are willing to make a noise. I hope there will be a reckoning.

Rivulets - In Our Circle

Rivulets - In Our Circle. What can I say, fucking awesome as always. Delicate and devastating. Tender and torn. Disarmingly honest in love's thrall. All and more.

Wil Bolton - Viridian Loops. Sri Lankan field recordings provide sonic gilding to this album of shifting ambient soundfields, from the maestro who has produced the likes of Bokeh, Under A Name That Hides Her and other ambient masterpieces.

Sean Foran - Molecule. A brief and finely detailed solo piano meditation from Brsibane based composer/pianist Sean Foran. My solo piano track of the year.

Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore - Ghost Forests. Embering, resonant, dark folk for the hearth and heart.
